Arlington used to be called West Cambridge until 1867, when it renamed itself after the Civil War cemetery — a fairly common thing for New England towns to do in that era, though Arlington's the one that stuck. The Minuteman Bikeway, a converted rail line, now runs straight through town toward Lexington and Bedford.

It's a family town by reputation, with strong public schools pulling people in from denser parts of Boston once kids enter the picture.
