Haverhill ran a shoe manufacturing industry for most of the 1800s and early 1900s, much like Lynn did on the other side of the region — the factories are mostly gone now, but a lot of the old mill buildings downtown have survived and are slowly being converted into housing.

Poet John Greenleaf Whittier was born here, and the city's been working on revitalizing its downtown for years with mixed but real results. We see a fair number of moves into the newer converted-mill apartments alongside the more traditional single-family neighborhoods further from the center.
